Serotonin

How can I balance Serotonin levels naturally?

How can I balance Serotonin levels naturally? image

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter needed for the health of the nervous system. Optimal Serotonin levels are needed by the brain to bring about feelings of wellbeing, happiness and a balanced mood.  The herb St Johns Wort has been traditionally used to help support the nervous system as it has a direct effect on Serotonin levels.  Many people give great testimonials in regards to this herb helping to give support to their nervous system, reduce feelings of depression. This herb is more commonly used in Germany for mood disorders than prescription anti-depressants.

Lifestyle factors to boost Serotonin

  • Practice nervous system restoration practices such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, walking, time out to do hobbies, get a massage, stress management techniques and conflict resolution.
  • Excessive stress and use of recreational drugs deplete the production of Serotonin
  • Intense (cardiovascular) exercise stimulates the production of Serotonin as does sunlight

Natural therapies to promote Serotonin synthesis:

  • Magnesium and B Vitamins are important nutrients for the health of the nervous system and rapidly decline when the nervous system is strung out.  B Vitamins also act as co-factors to the synthesis of neurotransmitters
  • The amino acid Tryptophan is a precursor for the production of Serotonin
  • The minerals Calcium and Magnesium may increase the effectiveness of Serotonin
  • Herbs such as Ginseng, St Johns Wort, Passionflower and Valerian may help to maintain Serotonin levels.  Other herbs such as Magnolia, St Johns Wort, Rhodiola, Chamomile, Oats, Alfalfa, Siberian Ginseng, Sacred Basil and Withania may help to fortify your nervous system and better regulate the production of Serotonin
