Nasal polyps

Is there anything to help prevent the recurrence of nasal polyps?

Is there anything to help prevent the recurrence of nasal polyps? image

Nasal polyps (small protrusions) may be caused by chronic inflammation of the mucosal lining that protects the nasal passages, the sinus cavities may also become inflamed.  The mucosal lining of the nasal passage helps to protect the passages from environmental pollutants and are often bombarded with foreign particles that can cause inflammation.  When air travels through the nasal cavity it is warmed and filtered by the cilia (hair) of the nose.  If a foreign particle is detected it is pushed out through the nose or to the back of the throat to be cleared from the sensitive area.  If this area is continuously irritated then nasal polyps may become a problem.   These growths may affect your ability to breath and cause obstruction to the airways of the nose and sinuses.

Symptoms of nasal polyps

Polyps can form individually or in small clusters, mostly they are benign but can occasionally become malignant. Sometimes no symptoms are noted, however most people complain that nasal polyps cause the following:

  • Runny nose
  • Postnasal drip
  • Congestion and increased mucous production
  • Headaches, pressure in the sinus cavities
  • Sinus infections and allergies
  • Snoring
  • Rhinitis symptoms (hayfever, itchy eyes)
  • Loss of taste sensation and smell
  • Symptoms similar to those of the common cold
  • Swelling, inflammation of mucosal lining

Diet tips for nasal polyps

  • Consume more garlic, onions and ginger in your diet as these have an antibiotic and decongestive effect
  • Begin each day with a warm glass of lemon juice with some grated ginger and Manuka Honey
  • Reduce congestive foods such as dairy

Lifestyle factors for nasal polyps

  • Use a neti pot to help cleanse and soothe the area (add some warm salty water to the pot)
  • Use a salt nasal spray to clear congestion
  • Do gentle steam inhalations
  • Avoid irritants or airborne allergens as much as possible

Natural remedies for nasal polyps

  • Some decongestant herbs which may benefit are: Fenugreek, Marshmallow, Echinacea, Andrographis, Thyme and Mullein
  • Cod liver oil is high in Vitamins A and D to help heal and reduce inflammation of the mucous membranes
  • The enzyme Bromelain (from pineapples) helps to break down congestion
