What is Co Enzyme Q10 and why take it as a supplement?
Co Enzyme Q10 is an essential nutrient that plays an integral role in the production of Adenosine-tri-phosphate (ATP), the energy source for all body processes. Humans consume small amounts in foods such as mackeral, sardines, chicken and liver. It is also produced in limited amounts endogenously (within the body) and is present in every cell in the body.
Some of the indications CoQ10 is commonly used for:
- Anti-ageing and anti-oxidant
- Improving blood circulation, controlling blood pressure and strengthening the cardiovascular system
- Reducing cholesterol
- Improving oxygenation to the muscles, athletes, muscle pain, energy production
- Periodontal health - bleeding gums, receeding gums
- Regulating immunity and asthma
How much CoQ10 should I take each day?
- The total human body content of Coenzyme Q10 has been estimated to be 500 - 1,500 mg and the average human requirement to prevent deficiency is 5mg/ day
- Most supplements of CoQ10 range between 50-150mg, it is estimated that 2mg is needed per kilogram of body weight
- For the maintenance of cardiovascular health the recommended dosage is between 300-400mg and to prevent oxidation of LDL cholesterol is 100mg - 200mg/ day
- Many studies have recently concluded that doses greater than 30mg are best administered in two or three divided doses
- For maximum absorption and benefit of all supplements it is best to separate doses throughout the day rather than taking a macro dose once daily
