Bloodshot eyes

 image

The health of the eyes are a direct reflection of the internal environment of the liver, in Chinese medicine they are considered the “flowers of the liver”.  The sclera (whites of the eyes) are indicative of your present state of health.  Improving general liver function and detoxification can have a cleansing effect on the body and also improve circulation to the eyes.  The circulation and blood vessels of the eyes are very small in size, when they become irritated or dilated this is usually due to leaking blood vessels in the eyes.

Causes of bloodshot eyes

  • allergies
  • environmental irritations (dust, pollen and pollution)
  • liver function
  • dry eyes
  • nutritional deficiencies
  • conditions of the cardiovascular system
  • recreational drugs

Diet tips for eye health

  • Increase garlic, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and cabbage in your diet as these contain sulphuric compounds which benefit circulation
  • Improve your diet by increasing the amounts of fruits and vegetables you consume daily.  A diet full of vital nutrients and healthy foods means better nutritional status and lower chances of deficiencies
  • Increase foods rich in antioxidants such as berries, blueberries and cranberries

Lifestyle factors for eye health

  • Consider doing a cleansing detoxifying regime to improve the general health of the body and make the eyes clearer and less sensitive
  • Address any allergies or sensitivities, especially if you repeatedly suffer from hayfever, rhinitis or sinusitis
  • Minimise your exposure to dust, pollutants and airbourne allergens

Natural remedies for eye health

  • Herbal medicines to improve circulation to the eyes include: Goji berries, Green tea, Ginkgo, Bilberry, Eyebright, Calendula and Grape seed extract
  • Make an eye bath which can be used topically by infusing Calendula flowers in warm water and bathing the afflicted eye at least 3 times daily
  • Fish oil contains natural and potent anti-inflammatory properties to ensure better circulation to the micro-capillaries of the eyes
  • Improving your antioxidant status will help to strengthen the microcirculation to the eyes and reduce the irritation and incidence of blood vessels leaking
  • A deficiency of Vitamin C and bioflavinoids may result in weak capillaries and these nutrients strengthen the capillary walls
  • Vitamin A is a nutrient specific for the health of the eyes to improve circulation.  Other beneficial nutrients are Zinc and Lycopene
